“At the moment that we persuade a child, any child,

to cross that threshold, that magic threshold into a library,

we change their lives forever, for the better”

How to Raise a Reader

Reading to or with your child every day will help your child become a better reader.  It is never too early or too late to start reading as a family.  Here are a few tips:

  1. Find a quiet place to read together.
  2. Ask your child why they chose that book to read.
  3. Ask your child to make a prediction based on the cover.  What do you think will happen in this story?  Do you think it will be a happy story?  What might we learn from this book?
  4. After reading, ask your child to retell the story.  Ask your child to put themselves in the story.  Ask your child to change the ending of the story.  Ask them to draw a picture based on the story.
  5. As a family, do an activity inspired by the book.
  6. For more tips, do an internet search for "how to read to your child".  There is a lot of good advice for reading to/with children of various ages available.
  7. Just reading to, with, and/or beside your child will help your child grow as a reader!
